Make a Simple Family Emergency Plan
Preparedness starts with a plan your whole family understands. Work through these seven practical steps together.
1. Choose two meeting places
Pick a nearby spot outside your home for sudden emergencies, and a second place outside your neighborhood if returning home is unsafe. Show every family member both locations.
2. Write down emergency contacts
Keep a printed list of family phone numbers, addresses, schools, doctors, and a trusted out-of-town contact. Place copies in wallets, backpacks, vehicles, and your emergency kit.
3. Sign up for local emergency alerts
Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. Check your county or city's official emergency management website for alert subscriptions. Keep a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio as a backup.
4. Agree on a communication plan
Decide who everyone should contact, including when calls cannot connect. A short text with your location and safety status can sometimes work when voice calls do not.
5. Plan for children, medical needs, and pets
Know school reunification rules. List essential medications, mobility needs, pet carriers, food, and who can help vulnerable family members.
6. Know your evacuation options
Identify alternate exits and neighborhood routes. Keep essential documents accessible, and always follow local evacuation instructions when leaving is necessary.
7. Practice and update your plan
Walk through the plan together, practice meeting up, and review contact details at least twice each year or after a household change.
